The Charleston can be danced by yourself, or with a partner, and even in a group.

The music is ragtime jazz, from the 1920’s and the Charleston dance is lively and uses swaying arms as well as the fast movement of the feet. it makes for a great workout.

Think 1920’s and we think of iconic Charleston but the steps are thought to have originated on a small island near Charleston, S.C. Performed in Charleston as early as 19 hundreds, and by 1913 was being danced in Harlem stage shows. It became mainstream dance music in the US by the 1920’s When composer and pianist James P. Johnson created his Broadway show Runnin’ Wild in which he introduced the tune “The Charleston“.
